The Plan MOVES III program, officially extended into 2025, is the Spanish government's main incentive to make buying an electric vehicle more affordable. While our calculator gives you a precise estimate, it's essential to understand the real-world process, its timelines, and your obligations.
Unlike an instant discount, the Plan MOVES is a grant you receive long after buying the car:
We believe in full transparency. The Plan MOVES grant is a huge help, but it comes with major challenges you should consider before committing:
Do I really have to declare the grant on my tax return? Yes, absolutely. The Plan MOVES grant is considered a capital gain ('ganancia patrimonial') and is not tax-exempt. You must include it in your annual income tax return (IRPF, 'la Renta') for the tax year you receive the money (not when you buy the car). Depending on your income, you will have to pay back between 19% and 47% of the grant to the Tax Agency ('Agencia Tributaria').
Is there any other tax benefit? Yes. Separate from the grant, there is a 15% personal income tax (IRPF) deduction for buying a new EV. The maximum base for this deduction is €20,000, meaning an additional tax credit of up to €3,000. The Plan MOVES grant you receive is subtracted from the purchase price before calculating this deduction. You can find official conditions on the Agencia Tributaria website.
What's the maximum car price to qualify? The vehicle's price before VAT cannot exceed €45,000. This limit goes up to €53,000 for 8- or 9-seater electric vehicles. Your car must be on the official list of eligible models from the IDAE (Spain's Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving).
What about home chargers? The Plan MOVES III also subsidizes home charging points for individuals and communities, covering up to 70% of the cost (or 80% in towns with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants).
